E2EWET (End-to-End Web Energy Traceability) is a research project focused on measuring and analyzing energy consumption in web applications for sustainable software development. I worked on this project during my end-of-studies internship with the DRIT team at Berger-Levrault, a major European software company. The goal was to create a system that tracks energy consumption across the frontend, backend, and database to identify optimization opportunities and promote eco-friendly software practices. We built a distributed tracing system using OpenTelemetry to instrument each part of the application using Go, Java, and TypeScript. The system collects telemetry data that are then processed and stored in Elasticsearch and Jaeger. The system consists of a browser extension in TypeScript based on Firefox Profiler that measures energy consumption at the browser level and sends traces to Elasticsearch/Jaeger, along with a state-of-the-art OpenTelemetry agent that tracks user interactions and HTTP requests made by frontend applications. The system also includes a database monitoring agent in Go that tracks power consumption of target databases and publishes traces to Elasticsearch/Jaeger, and an extended OpenTelemetry Java instrumentation to publish energy traces from JAVA backend services. Finally, a core traceability server written in Go correlates all collected data and generates comprehensive energy consumption reports for users.
